Unit developments using shipping containers

it was an interesting article in a US newspaper called the Twin Tribune in Arizona.  The article printed on a unit development that was made of shipping containers.  Stacked on top of each other were shipping containers in an industrial area of Phoenix, Arizona.

The containers were transformed into eight apartments – the shipping container still had its markings on the outside, all serial numbers and business logos of the shipping companies themselves remaining.  Inside developers

 

 

Made each unit at 740 ft.² of living area.  In Australian terms that works out at just over 68 m² of the area when converted.

One of the residents said that they signed a lease for 12 months thousand dollars a month and that the living within felt like a normal part and not living in a container that was once used shipping goods.

Shipping container developments have become more and more popular around the US in other cities such as Las Vegas, Detroit and Washington.  Some of the tenants inside the Arizona property did indicate that they get annoyed by people advising them to want to look inside unique developments.

Some in viewing the Phoenix development claim the cheaper and faster and potentially have more anaesthetic range and what he can develop the property into.  What is not covered as we have written in previous articles is the downside is often overlooked when building with containers.  I have seen developments referring to the fact that the original wood flooring encased in epoxy.  However no mention was made and I wonder if the developers themselves were aware that in some cases these drawings may contain chemicals that were used such as treatments for fumigation, insect control etc and maybe toxic people given that they’re not designed to be lived in.

The savings are a small percentage in timber usage but a large percentage in the labour savings of time to completion of the project.

The Phoenix development was constructed using two containers.  The units generally comprise two bedrooms with one hallway having a kitchen and some counterspace.
